Speech and Language Therapy offers a complete assessment of a pupils communication skills such as understanding, memory and expression. Difficulties in this area often contribute to behaviour, emotional and learning difficulties so it is important to investigate these in order to create a holistic overview of the needs of the student.

Assessment

Comprehensive assessment of a student’s communication strengths and needs. This may include formal and informal testing and/or classroom observation. A detailed report including recommendations and onward referral (if applicable) is provided afterwards for families and school staff. Assessments can cover:

  • Speech sound production
  • Language (expressive language, memory and understanding)
  • Social communication differences

Screening

Short language screening for up to four children (15–20 minutes each), offering baseline information before intervention and follow‑up measures after therapy. Includes short individual reports with recommended activities and optional staff support or modelling.

Therapy

A block of six weekly sessions (45–60 minutes), either individual or as part of a group, targeting specific communication goals. Sessions are delivered in school, often with a Teaching Assistant observing so they can continue the work between sessions. 

In‑School Support

School‑based support to assist with early intervention and ongoing provision. This may include:

  • Planning or review meetings
  • Short consultations with staff about targets and next steps
  • Demonstration of recommended speech and language activities or interventions, such as Lego-based therapy or the principles of attention autism.
  • Development of school‑based policies, for example ensuring every classroom is more communication‑friendly.

Multi‑Disciplinary Work

  • Joint assessment or collaboration with Educational Psychologists, Specialist Teachers, and/ or Occupational Therapists to provide a holistic understanding of a student’s needs.
  • Working with teachers/ SENCOs to complete environmental audits to help identify how well the classroom or school environment supports communication.

Training

Bespoke training for school staff, available as short after‑school sessions or half/full‑day INSET. Previous topics include:

  • Comprehension and expressive language

  • Early language development and literacy
